Houston rides to Gonzalez.

Erastus "Deaf" Smith

With the Texas Government declared at Washington-on-the-Brazos Houston gets on his horse and heads for Gonzalez. He says he's going to organize relief for the Alamo but he doesn't hurry. He takes five days to ride what ought to be covered in two, stopping two nights and a whole day at Burnam's Ferry on the Colorado to drink and talk.

When he rides into Gonzalez on Friday, March 11. The town is in a panic with news that the Alamo has fallen, Travis and the defenders killed to a man. He has two men who arrived from San Antonia arrested for spreading the news and sends Deaf Smith ahead. Smith Returns with Mr's Dickinson and her children. He doesn't lock them up. He sends a courier to Fannin at Goliad with orders to retreat to Victoria.
